About the Kerala Calendar

The Kerala calendar (Kollavarsham) is a solar sidereal calendar used in Kerala. The year begins with the month of Chingam (August-September) and the twelve months are named after the zodiac signs. This calendar combines the Malayalam month system with the Gregorian calendar and marks important Hindu festivals observed in Kerala.

Malayalam Calendar 2026— Kollavarsham, Nakshatra & Festivals

Nandanam's Kerala calendar shows the Gregorian and Malayalam (Kollavarsham) dates side by side — today's Malayalam month (masam), the daily Nakshatra, Pournami and Amavasya markers, Kerala festivals and bank holidays — all in one view.

What is the Malayalam Calendar (Kollavarsham)?

The Malayalam calendar, also called Kollavarsham(“Kollam era”), is Kerala's traditional solar calendar. Introduced in 825 CE, it is still the calendar used for temple festivals, housewarmings, weddings, ancestral rites and daily puja across Kerala. Dates are tracked using 12 solar months, each named after the sun's transit through a rashi (zodiac sign).

The 12 Malayalam Months

  • Chingam (Aug–Sep) — begins with Onam
  • Kanni (Sep–Oct)
  • Thulam (Oct–Nov)
  • Vrishchikam (Nov–Dec) — Mandala Kalam / Sabarimala season
  • Dhanu (Dec–Jan)
  • Makaram (Jan–Feb) — Makara Vilakku
  • Kumbham (Feb–Mar)
  • Meenam (Mar–Apr)
  • Medam (Apr–May) — Vishu (new year)
  • Edavam (May–Jun)
  • Mithunam (Jun–Jul)
  • Karkidakam (Jul–Aug) — Ramayana Masam

Pournami, Amavasya & Nakshatra

Alongside the solar month, the Kerala calendar tracks lunar features that matter for worship. Pournami (full moon) and Amavasya (new moon) are marked each month, as is the daily Nakshatram — the star the moon occupies. These are read together with the daily Panchangam to choose auspicious dates for weddings, travel and puja.
