About
About Rahu Kaalam
Rahu Kaalam, Yamagandam, and Gulika Kaalam are inauspicious time periods in Hindu astrology. Rahu Kaal is considered the most inauspicious, ruled by the shadow planet Rahu. During these periods, it is traditionally advised to avoid starting new ventures, journeys, or important activities. These timings are calculated based on the day of the week and the sunrise/sunset times of the location.

Rahu Kaalam Today — Yamagandam & Gulika Timings for Kerala
Check today's Rahu Kaalam, Yamagandam and Gulika Kaalam windows for Kerala before starting new ventures, travel, weddings or signing important documents. Timings are calculated from local sunrise and sunset using traditional Hindu astronomy.
What is Rahu Kaalam?
Rahu Kaalam (also spelled Rahu Kalam or Rahukalam) is a short, roughly 90-minute window each day considered inauspicious in Hindu tradition. It is ruled by Rahu, the shadow planet, and its timing shifts each day based on local sunrise and sunset. In Kerala, Rahu Kaalam is consulted before weddings, housewarmings, journey starts, signing contracts, buying property or any major new undertaking.
How Rahu Kaalam is calculated
The daylight span (sunrise to sunset) is divided into eight equal segments. Rahu Kaalam falls on a different segment depending on the weekday:
- Monday — 2nd segment (≈ 7:30 AM – 9:00 AM)
- Tuesday — 7th segment (≈ 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM)
- Wednesday — 5th segment (≈ 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM)
- Thursday — 4th segment (≈ 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM)
- Friday — 3rd segment (≈ 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM)
- Saturday — 6th segment (≈ 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM)
- Sunday — 8th segment (≈ 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM)

Yamagandam & Gulika Kaalam
Alongside Rahu Kaalam, Kerala tradition observes two more inauspicious windows each day. Yamagandam is ruled by Yama, the god of death, and is particularly avoided for travel and new journeys. Gulika Kaalam is ruled by Gulika, a son of Shani — actions begun in Gulika Kaalam are believed to repeat, so it is avoided for anything you do not wish to recur (funerals, medical procedures) but occasionally chosen for things you do want to repeat (daily puja, savings deposits).
