Every weekday in Hindu tradition is ruled by a specific deity — Surya, Shiva, Hanuman, Ganesha, Vishnu, Lakshmi or Shani. Nandanam shows you today's god, the sacred mantra to chant, and the traditional offerings and fasts associated with worshipping them.
The Seven Weekday Deities
- Sunday · Surya — The Sun God. Mantra: Om Suryaya Namaha. Offer red flowers and wheat; fast for health, vitality and leadership.
- Monday · Shiva — The Destroyer and transformer. Mantra: Om Namah Shivaya. Offer bilva leaves, milk and water; fast for peace, marital harmony and moksha.
- Tuesday · Hanuman — The fearless protector. Mantra: Om Hanumate Namaha. Offer sindoor and jaggery; observe for courage, protection from enemies and strength.
- Wednesday · Ganesha — The remover of obstacles. Mantra: Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha. Offer modakas and durva grass; worship before any new venture or exam.
- Thursday · Vishnu — The preserver, ruled by Guru (Jupiter). Mantra: Om Namo Narayanaya. Offer yellow flowers and chickpea-based sweets; fast for prosperity and wisdom.
- Friday · Lakshmi — The goddess of wealth and beauty. Mantra: Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namaha. Offer white flowers, rice and kheer; observe for abundance and family wellbeing.
- Saturday · Shani — The karmic judge. Mantra: Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namaha. Offer sesame oil, black sesame and iron; observe to mitigate Shani's tough lessons.
